Come for a taste of Norway

Delicious selection of marinated herring on bread from Din Baker.SUBANG JAYA, March 18 We went straight for the Norwegian marinated herring from Sildakongens, laid on small slices of bread, at the Norwegian Food and Consumer Fair which opened this Wednesday at the Empire Shopping Gallery in Subang.I particularly liked the one with pickled herring, onions and mustard. There was also a tomato and a salted variety. We tested the herring on 500 people before Christmas at a seafood restaurant in Jalan Ipoh to find out whether they liked it or not, said Sidsel Ruud, general manager of Norwegian Herring Sdn Bhd.
Salmon burgers available at the fair... from C-Food Portions.Obviously they did, and now they are making a debut at this fair, which will run till Sunday March 20.Herring cannot be farmed. We catch them wild from November to April in the North Atlantic, nearly to the North Pole, said Sidsel. It used to be poor peoples food in Norway; its full of protein, Omega 3, Vitamin D and B12. Its so nutritious that people could survive on potato and herring. Those attending the fair bought jars of it to take home, the most popular being the pickled herring with onions.Beside the Sildakongens booth is C-food Portions, with more seafood such as fresh salmon, haddock, cod, live scallops and shrimps, as well as smoked salmon, haddock and mackerel from Norsk Sjomat AS.They were for the tasting, as well as buying. The hot smoked mackerel caught my fancy. It had chilli and pepper on it and tastes good on a slice of cucumber, or bread from Din Baker.Din Baker is all about Norwegian breads which can be found at Bakery Moments cafes all over the Klang Valley. The first one is at the Ikano Power Centre in Petaling Jaya.Freshly baked breads made with the healthy and nutritious blended flour from Norway can be found at the fair. The flour ! is from Norgesmollene, Norways largest flour mill. You can also buy Norwegian artisanal sandwiches from the Din Baker booth; Flying Chicken Cheese, Dancing Chicken with Mushroom, Swimming Salmon and BBQ Bugwich.
Sidsel and Silvert Simonsen having a spot of fun posing at the fair.Several varieties of pastries and boller (sweet Norwegian buns) and Pure Norway salmon fillets with herb sauce are also attracting attention at the fair. After eating, you should brush your teeth right? And none do a better job than the very distinctive three-sided Dr Barman toothbrushes. It brushes three surfaces at one time. No matter how you brush, your teeth will be clean, said Shin Hooi from Smile Link, the distributor for these toothbrushes together with special dental care products. There is a size for men (their jaws are bigger), another for women, and for children aged 12 and below. Senior citizens with gum problems have a special range of Dr Barman Superbrush. There is also the Petosan range of toothbrushes, for pets too! Dr Barmans toothbrushes have been selling in pharmacies and some supermarkets for the past year.I have my eye on the Ekornes Stressless recliners and sofas from Norway. Its hard to resist lying on the recliner which responds to the desired seating or reclining position by just a sheer shift of bodyweight. There are no buttons to push or levers to pull! These Stressless models can be found at Comfort Studio by Macy in some shopping centres in Kuala Lumpur. The fair also features a photo exhibition Norway at a glance, which gives you an impression of life in Norway. By looking at these spectacular photos you will get a feeling of the land far up north, seen through the lens of various Norwegian photographers.
