Traditional Chinese Name: 石黄皮 (shí huáng pí)



What is this?


  • The small, oval-shaped fruit of a species of strong scented evergreen trees

  • The plant is usually 3-8m in height and is native to southeast Asia

  • The fruit is 3cm long and roughly 2cm in diameter with a long oval body

  • The color of fruit ranges from brown to yellow skin and has a white pulp and is sweet and slightly tart to taste

  • You can use this in soups or desserts and can also be eaten raw

  • It is a common fruit in China, Vietnam and other south east Asian countries


How do I prepare it?



  • Rinse in warm water before usage

  • Using a flat edge knife, smash the wampee fruit until flat - this also helps release more flavours

  • Available in wet marts as fresh produce in Hong Kong

  • Might be available in supermarkets in Asia and Australia
