A lucky Chinese New Year feast

It starts with the Yee Sang, going on to other dishes with ingredients like fish, prawns, abalone, fatt choy, cabbage and just about anything that means something auspicious.Tai Zi Heen at the Prince Hotel Kuala Lumpur has put together the very special Standard Chartered Extravagant 8 Menu, with eight dishes for eight people, at RM888++ for the Chinese New Year.We tossed a Salmon Yee Sang with a very generous serving of salmon slices and jellyfish in a blackcurrant plum dressing. The sauce is light, not too sweet, and the combination of shredded vegetables, pomelo, pickles and flour crispies is just right.
The panfried Tiger Prawns had all the right flavours.You can also choose a Tuna Yee Sang or the Vegetarian Snow Pear Yee Sang, with the same dressing.A light Eight Treasure Broth with sundried seafood kickstarted the hot dishes in the menu, followed by the Braised Sea Whelk with fatt choy, bai ling, dried shiitake and straw mushrooms. Its the usual auspicious combination of vegetables, except that this has thin slices of smooth sea whelk, which is a kind of sea snail, in it.The Panfried Tiger Prawns with Chinese herb-infused superior soy sauce are done in the kon cheen har lok style, and was the best dish of the evening. The shells glistened with the dark, sticky sweet sauce that also seeped into the prawn meat.The Cantonese-style Roast Chicken with fragrant salt and prawn crackers is an old-fashioned dish that should find favour with children who like fried chicken. The pink prawn crackers disappeared in a flash at our table.
Braised sea whelk w! ith fatt choy, bai ling, dried shiitake and straw mushrooms ... lots of prosperity here.Golden Fried Rice with shrimp and crabmeat ended the savoury part of the meal. The desserts for this dinner included Sweetened Red Bean Cream with Glutinous Rice Dumplings and Crispy Fried Brown Sugar Cake or nin ko.The RM888++ menu is available till Feb 17.
